GeoTools 9.2 Released

The GeoTools community is pleased to announce the availability of GeoTools 9.2 for download from SourceForge:

This release has also been deployed to the OSGeo Maven Repository.

Please see the Release Notes for details. This release is made in conjunction with GeoServer 2.3.2.

In addition to bug fixes:

The application schema support (app-schema) module now enables joining support by default for data sources that support it; this improvement and many bug fixes by Rini Angreani.
XML parser support for unsigned numeric bindings has been added by Justin Deoliveira.
Fixed transformation problems with projections based on Hotine Oblique Mercator (variant B) (for example Swiss CH1903 / LV03)

Getting Started with GeoTools

GeoTools is an Open Source Geospatial Foundation project helping Java developers work with geospatial data. For a complete list of features please see the project overview included in our documentation.

If you would like to get started with GeoTools a Quickstart is available (covering Eclipse, NetBeans and command line Maven use). Additional tutorials and build instructions are included in the user guide.

GeoTools 9.x is the current stable series with a release scheduled each month. This level of service is part of our six month timed release cycle. We are always interested in volunteers - if you are in position to assist please stop by geotools-devel and lend a hand.

If you are upgrading from a previous version of GeoTools please review the upgrade instructions, as there has been some API changes around the use of FeatureCollection and ReferencedEnvelope.

About GeoTools 9.1

This is our first dot release on the 9.1 series and is focused on bug fixes and stability. This release is made in conjunction with GeoServer 2.3.1.

Headline improvement is support for SQL Server native geometry serialisation. The fix was supplied by Anders Bakkevold and is expected to have a huge impact on performance. This work was sponsored by Norwegian Directorate for Nature Management and performed by Bouvet.
SQL Server also got a fix to make native paging optional.
Thanks to Dieter DePaepe for fixing GEOT-2791, addressing a long standing issue working with sparse shapefiles.
Thanks to Frank Warmerdam for submitting a fix to distance calculations used when testing map projects. Frank was also kind enough to write a blog post covering his experience fixing GeoTools.
Improvements to Arc parsing in GML were provided by Jira Novak.
Shane StClair has added UUID mappings to PostGIS.
Finally thanks to Simone who has addressed an annoying colour space issue on recent windows installations.

Thanks to all our volunteers on GitHub and the dedicated community members reviewing pull requests. A reminder to include a test-case with any proposed fix so we can smoothly review your work.

The GeoTools community is pleased to announce the availability of GeoTools 9.0 for download from sourceforge:

This release is also deployed to our OSGeo Maven Repository.

This is the first stable release of the 9.x series made in conjunction with the GeoServer 2.3.0 release. This release represents the successful transition of the project to a six month timed release cycle.

This release contains mostly bug fixes since 9.0-RC1. Please see the change log for more details.
Here is a summary of the major news in the 9.x series:

Feature Collection Clean up: we have retired several methods from FeatureCollection that were only applicable for in memory feature collections. A Quality Assurance review was performed on all FeatureCollection implementations resulting in a great improvement on consistency. Thanks to Jody Garnett and Andrea Aime for this work.
The Vector Grid module has graduated from the "unsupported" staging area and is now included as an extension. Thanks to Micheal Bedward for championing this work.
General support for complex features has been factored out into the gt-complex module for reuse.
FeatureCollection, FeatureIteartor and FeatureReader are Java 7 ready with support for try-with-resource syntax.
Partial 3D data support has been added with direct support for PostGIS, Oracle, and Property DataStore. Thanks to Andrea Aime for the initial implementation, with a follow-up funded by NTLIS for Oracle support.
Thanks to Niels Charlier for putting together ReferenceEnvelope3D allowing us to query three-dimensional datasets.
WMS client support has greatly improved with WMS 1.3.0 now enabled by default during version negotiation. Thanks to LISAsoft and the OGC for supporting this work.
New OGC models have been added for WCS 2.0 and OWS 2.0 along with XML support.
Updated to use the latest ImageIO-Ext 1.1.6 and JTS 1.13 releases

New OSGeo Contributor License

The GeoTools PSC is pleased to announce a new contribution license for the project. The contribution license is signed by authors in order to license their work to the OSGeo Foundation for distribution by the GeoTools project.

There are actually two licenses (one for individuals and one for corporate contributors) which are available in our developers guide or directly from the OSGeo Foundation licenses page:

This license arrangement is much easier to understand, and is based directly on the Apache Contributor License. This last point is important as it is much easier for your legal department to research and sign off on.

These licenses were approved at a recent board meeting and are the result of our request for change procedure (see Replace Contribution Agreement RFC).

Thanks to Robin Pradel for submitting a patch for GEOT-4192, fixing a bug that resulted in illegal SQL statements when setting a value for the primary key metadata table including a schema.

This is a bug fix release containing a number of fixes and improvements, including:

several fixes to rendering transformations allowing several transformations to be chained together in the same rendering request (e.g., interpolate values from discrete points and then also extract isolines from it)
fixes to date/time handling in CQL
spotted and fixed a deadlock in the rendering subsystem happening if the renderer gets abruptly stopped while working against a very fast data source (or a very slow Graphics2D implementation)
a new PullParser class allowing for better streaming parsing of large amounts of XML (e.g., GML, KML)
better handling of raster "no data" during reprojection, avoiding border artifacts in the results
a new Oracle specific filter function exposing Oracle spatials's K nearest neighbor search

FeatureCollection cleanup

The FeatureCollection cleanup proposal is now complete. The first batch of work went into the GeoTools 8.0 release, this second phase removes several methods from FeatureCollection. These methods were not widely implemented, and as a result not adopted by client code.

You can use this milestone release as a rest area until you have time to upgrade.

One of the joys of working on a large stable project such as GeoTools is the gradual change of pace, and the careful planning that goes into keeping projects working together:

The initial GeoTools 2.0 rewrite provided a clear FeatureResults API acting in a fashion similar to a JDBC ResultSet.
GeoTools 2.1 introduced FeatureCollection as a superclass of FeatureResults, bringing in the java.util.Collection methods being removed today. This was motivated by an amusing Bring Back FeatureCollection rant from our founder James MacGill - well we tried James and it was a bad idea.
The transition to Java 5 forced us to remove direct use of the java.util.Collection interface, however we kept the methods for backwards compatibility. It was too easy to introduce a resource leak with the Java 5 for-each syntax:

With todays change GeoTools programs are ready for the Java 7 try-with-resource syntax as shown below:

GeoTools 8.0 RC2 Released

The Geotools community is pleased to announce the availability of Geotools 8.0-RC2 for download on sourceforge.

support for Postgis 2.0.
Add option to forgo encoding srsDimension on gml geometries and envelopes.
Rendering Transformation process to allow on-the-fly heatmap visualization.
Support encoding of GML srsName in urn:ogc format.

As a follow up to our earlier post, GeoTools considering a switch to git, we are pleased to report a successful transition to GitHub last weekend (Happy Canada Day).

The change proposal, Transition to GitHub, has the details on what was involved in changing over.

A massive thanks to Justin DeOlivera for setting up the origional GitHub mirror, transitioning the committer list over to GitHub, updating the build boxes to checkout from the new repository, the release scripts to tag correctly and so forth. With any transition supporting the developer community is critical, and Justin has done a great job answering questions about git (and filling in lots of docs with the details).

GeoTools 2.7.5 Released

The GeoTools community is pleased to announce the release of GeoTools 2.7.5, available for download:

Those using maven should see the Quickstart for details on using the OSGeo maven repository.

This release includes 62 between bug fixes and improvements. Some of the highlights include:

spatial filtering within SLD works fine also when using coordinate reprojection
a new GeometryBuilder that makes it easier to create geometries from code
better 2.5D data support, including database support and output encoding in GML and JSON (expect more work in this area)
improved SQL Server data store
more robust HSQL EPSG database (can recover from connection losses)
a set of small improvements to the WFS data store
a new version of the OGR data store in unsupported land based on the BridJ library

We also want to take the occasion to thanks the hard work of all core developers, and a special mention to non core developers that contributed patches and code to GeoTools:

If you are using Maven this release is deployed to our OSGeo Maven Repository: For more information on setting up your project with Maven see the Quickstart (included in the userguide documentation pack above).

This is a release candidate made in conjunction with GeoServer 2.2 beta and uDig 1.3.2.

As a release candidate we are pleased to showcases all the great improvements made for GeoTools 8.0 including docs, swing and core datastore improvements to support wfs2. On its own 8.0-RC1 is a jam-packed release with 65 fixes or improvements:

Upgraded to the latest ImageIO-Ext 1.1.3
Shapefile "next generation" support with sorting
A handy GeometryBuilder for fluent programming creation of geometries

We would also like to welcome two new committers to the project:

David Winslow who is a GeoServer committer and also the lead of the GeoNode project. David has proposed a number of solid patches over the years and most recently some work on the TransformerBase class to allow it to do buffered writing with mark/reset capabilities.
Martin Davis has been putting forth some great patches as of late, most recently centered around supporting 3/2.5D data making its way through the entire "stack".

Thanks to the GeoTools tribe for starting up the release train. We are looking forward to GeoTools 8.0 being available.

GeoTools considering a switch to Git

Hi all,

the GeoTools developers have been working, so far, with Subversion as the main version control system. However various core developers have been using Git as a SVN client for quite some time so far, and an official mirror of Geotools, automatically kept in synch with Subversion, is already available on GitHub.

We are now considering switching permantently from Subversion to Git, meaning the Subversion repository will eventually be abandoned and only the Git official central repo will be kept up to date.

Before making such move we'd like to hear from the users community, please take one minute to share your opinion about the switch to Git:

AURIN Job Openings

This is a milestone release made in conjunction with the Open Source Developers Conference.

This is an incremental release with a few usability and documentation improvements ahead of a "Geospatial for Java" workshop:

The big news is updating the library for the WFS 2.0 filter and Query model. Justin and Gabriel have been hard at work on an experimental branch and we are pleased to see this work return to trunk
Thanks to Frank Gasdorf we now have German translations for the gt-swing module
Thanks to Micheal Bedward for his continued attention to detail working through all the MapContent and Layer methods. Combined with consistently following the JComponent naming conventions the gt-swing module is becoming easier and easier to work with.
Jody Garnett continues to refine the user guide; and has added CommonFactoryFinder.getFilterFactory() methods that no longer require a set of hints be passed in. Ninety percent of the time example code used null for the set of hints.
Gabriel has been hard at work adding basic HTTP authentication to the WMS client code
Gabriel, Jody and Mark have been working through support for versioned information using the Filter 2.0 ResourceId concepts
Micheal Bedward has added a great improvement with GeoTools.getAboutInfo() - allowing applications to log the GeoTools version, execution environment and listing the GeoTools jars discovered on the CLASSPATH. For bonus points this information is available in a ready to use AboutDialog

GeoTools Mini Conference at OSDC Canberra

GeoTools has lined up an exciting "Mini Conference" slot at this years Open Source Developers Conference in Canberra Nov 14th (at Australian National University in the Manning Clark Center).

You can attend just the GeoTools session for $50 - but we recommend staying for the whole open source conference. There is also the Spatial@Gov conference running concurrently if you would like to focus on maps for the rest of the week.
